Moulin Rouge
I have clollected various images from the film adaptation of Moulin Rouge. From these images I can clearly see that the main colours used/highlighted are red, black and white. The red connotes lust and is a powerful colour: something that is often associated with theatre. The fact that the female wears the Hat also suggests a sense of power which is something I have used in my music video. This is highlighted further by the red lipstick worn by the female character, again this connotes lust but also danger as the women conventionally cause a fatal end for the male character in these particular narratives. The costumes are usually made of sequins which is highly recognisable as femining and also a quality of clothing used commonly in theatre.
Dream girls
Having researched various images from the musical film 'Dream Girls' there was some common themes to pick up on. Again red is used to connote lust and power, the costume again consists of sequins: something highly recognisable in theatrical performances. The contrasts of dark lighting with bright stage lighting allows the colours to stand out to an audience and also allows shadows to form which again is highly recogniable in theatre. Silhoettes are often used to outline the figure of an artist and place them in a position of power.
Burlesque
I researched the newest theatrical/musical film released in early 2011 and noticed that the same codes and conventions have been applied. From these images I can make clear links to musicals such as Chicago, Dream Girls and Moulin Rouge and also to my music video itself. The costume in each of these images is embellished with sequins. Sequins connote glamour and draw in the audiences attention. In the last image Christina Aguilera wears a hat which suggests she has power. The use of the chairs is a common prop used in music videos such as Britney Spears circus and in west end musicals such as Chicago, this is also a convention I have featured in my music video. Again the contrast of bright lighting with the dark background put the artist in a position of power and focus. The red lighting used in the first image connotes power and lust which is highlighted further by the male dancers who surround the main artist.
Codes and conventions essay:
I am creating a music video for Roxie Hart a song from the musical Chicago. The genre of my music and music video is musicals. In each genre within music videos there is a strict set of rules and conventions that should be followed to make a music video successful. When considering codes and conventions there are three important elements which are: technical codes, written codes and symbolic codes. Even the simplest elements may be iconic to that specific genre.
Having analysed Britney Spears Circus, Moulin Rouge and Hurt by Christina Aguilera it is clear that there is a distinguished set of codes and conventions involved with this genre of music. Bright lighting is always contrasted with dark lighting this creates a theatrical look to the set. The artist is always the main focus of attention and often has other characters surrounding her to highlight her importance for example makeup artists, back up dancers. Jewellery is often highlighted in some way for example in Britney Spears circus diamonds are repeatedly highlighted as she gets ready in her dressing room, in Moulin rouge servants bring over jewels. Red is a common colour used in set design and makeup. This is because the colour connotes lust and also theatrical success for example the red carpet and is an intertextual reference to Marilyn Monroe as she was very much a show girl. Top hats are repeatedly used on females to symbolise their power on stage and also represent elements of magic.
there is always a stage of some kind were the artists performs. This gives the audience voyeuristic pleasure to see the artist perform. Candles and fire are often used to dramatise. Having looked at various music video the same props occur in each video for example the artist usually wears gloves, their clothing consists of sequins, knee high sock and top hats. All of these items of clothing are iconic and recognisable to this particular genre.
As for the set there are always stage curtains this again is iconic and often used to represent the beginning and end of the music video just like it does in a theatre production. Chairs are often used and the artist will use the chair as a prop in a dance routine, although this is commonly done it always works and looks effective and again connotes this show girl/dance image. Clothing material is also extremely important in Hurt the clothing was of chiffon material which looks expensive and connotes wealth in the other music videos the sequins and dimontys represent glamour and also the power to stand out. Animals are commonly used this represents circus shows and magic just like the top hats do, although the context is not the same it works well because it is the same genre.
Having looked closely at the common shots used i noticed that silhouettes were repeatedly used. This again is something commonly used in the music industry as is looks effective and sophisticated. In this genre it can represent intimacy between the audience and the performer and draws the attention of the audience in. Low angle shots are used to make the artist look more powerful, the artist will often look down into the camera and sing.
There is usually more than one location used you often see the artist get ready, perform and flashbacks are sometimes featured. In doing this it creates a narrative of the artists story. There is always a strong beginning and end which is clearly recognisable.
Whenever the artist is accompanied by other characters shallow depth of field is used to ensure they are the main focal point. On average shots should not last any more than 3 seconds. Having watched various videos I noticed shots only last split seconds at times at that it is important because the audience want to see something visually new all the time otherwise they loose interest.
The dominant shot throughout is usually close ups on the artist this is because again is gives the audience voyeuristic pleasure to see the artist perform. Establishing shots are always used to introduce a new location. Long shots are used often when the artist is dancing. Audience members are often featured and this makes the viewer feel part of the audience as though the music video is a show they are watching which as a viewer is effective. Wide shots are often used when there is a lot of action taking place for example if there is more than once dancer and the dancing is at a fast pace. The artist is at some point lifted into the air by backing dancers again this looks theatrical. Shots usually cut from one to the other which makes it look like continuity editing and creates realism for the audience. The pace at the end either picks up pace or slows down this signals to the audience that the video is about to end.
White is often used to contradict the innocent pure connotation it usually has just like top hats are worn by females instead of males. By breaking these stereotypical connotations it creates an almost rebellious image and creates attitude within the performers image.

Experimenting With Colour On Website: Blue
Here I have experiemented with colour again to create a blue theme. Although it may look appealing it is not a conventional colour used for this specific genre. I edited the colour of the image displayed at the very top on photo shop by clicking on image - Adjustments - Colour balance. This allowed me to edit the colour of the background easily with a wide range of different colours.

Experimenting With Colour On Website: Purple
Here I have edited the colour on a draft version of my homepage. I have edited the colour on photoshop so that the image at the top does not alter in quality but only in colour. I did this by clicking on Image - Adjustments - Colour - Colour balance. This then allowed me to experiment with a wide range of colours. The colour of this draft does meet a requirement set by my codes and conventions as it is visually appealing to an audience as the background colour is bright which is contrasted by the font colour and different sections which are highlighted in black.
Experimenting With Colour on Album advertisement: Purple
This is an example of an draft of the album advertisement in which I have experimented with the colour scheme. I edited the video on Photoshop by clicking on Image- Adjustments- Colour balance. I like the brightness of the colour as it is eye catching . There is still vital information which needs to be included on the advertisement such as where the album can be purchased or downloaded.
Experimenting With Colour On Website: Purple
This is a draft of my homepage in which I have altered the colour of the background to experiment with different styles and approaches. I feel that although this colour looks visually striking it may be too bright for the user, it is also not a conventional colour of my genre. I edited the colour on Photoshop by clicking on Image- adjustments - colour balance.

Experimenting With Colour on website: Red
This is a draft of my homepage. I have made the background red on photoshop by clicking on image- adjustment- colour balance. I am happy with the colour scheme of red black and white as these are the main theme colours running through my music video. The red connotes the theatricality of my music video and the artist. There are still improvement to be made but this is a possible colour scheme/layout for my music video.

Font Ideas For Album Advertisement And Website Homepage
This is a mood board of different fonts for my album advertisment and website homepage. These fonts were taken from an online source 'www.dafont.com'. I then edited them on photoshop to change the colour of the font. Just like my music video the main colour scheme is red, black and white this will also be the case for my album advertisement and website homepage.
Fonts from established websites and advertisments
This is a mood board of fonts taken from different artists website homepages and album advertisements (from the top: Lady Gaga, Jessie.J, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Rhianna). The font is usually unique and one which can be highly recognised as belonging to that artist. Each of the fonts are made to stand out in someway by the background they are placed on. There is usually a contrast in colours so that the font stands out on the page from it's background.
